The Octopus Energy refer-a-friend scheme currently gives both the existing customer and the person switching £50 energy credit for a qualifying home referral.
If you’re joining Octopus Energy, you can use my referral link:

I’ve been an Octopus Energy customer since 2019 and still use the supplier today.
How does Octopus Energy refer a friend work?
Every Octopus Energy customer receives their own unique referral link.
If somebody uses that link to switch their home energy supply to Octopus, the current standard referral reward is:
- £50 energy credit for the new customer
- £50 energy credit for the person who referred them
That means Octopus effectively splits a £100 referral reward between the two customers.
The reward is applied as credit to your Octopus Energy account rather than being paid directly into your bank account.

The easiest option is simply to follow the referral link, as your referral should then be tracked automatically when you sign up.
How to claim your £50 Octopus referral credit
The process is fairly simple.
- Follow my Octopus Energy referral link.
- Enter your postcode and get an energy quote.
- Choose the tariff you want.
- Complete your switch to Octopus Energy.
- Wait for your energy supply to transfer.
- Make your first successful Direct Debit payment.
- Your qualifying £50 referral credit will be added to your Octopus Energy account.
You should use the referral link before completing your switch rather than trying to add it afterwards.
When does Octopus pay the referral bonus?
The £50 isn’t normally credited as soon as you complete the sign-up form.
You need to become an Octopus Energy customer and make your first successful Direct Debit payment.
Once the referral requirements are met, the reward is added as credit to the energy account.
Your exact switching and payment dates will determine how quickly this happens.
Is the Octopus referral reward cash?
No.
For normal household referrals, the £50 is energy account credit.
This means it reduces the amount you owe Octopus for your gas or electricity rather than being transferred to your current account.
For most customers, that effectively means £50 less to pay towards future energy bills.
Can I refer more than one friend?
Yes. Existing Octopus customers can share their personal referral link with friends and family.
Each qualifying referral can generate another referral reward.
Once you’re an Octopus customer yourself, you’ll receive your own personal referral details to share.
Does the person referring me get £50 too?
Yes.
For a qualifying household referral, the standard Octopus scheme currently gives £50 to each person.
That means you’ll receive £50 energy credit and I’ll also receive referral credit if you join using my link and meet the qualifying requirements.
I think that’s worth being clear about rather than pretending the referral is completely one-sided.

What is my Octopus referral code?
My personal Octopus referral code is:
smart-fox-386
And my referral link is:
You don’t usually need to manually enter the code if you use the referral link.
Can existing Octopus customers claim the £50?
The standard referral scheme is primarily intended for customers bringing new people to Octopus Energy.
If you’re already with Octopus, don’t assume that clicking another customer’s referral link will generate a new £50 credit.
If you think you should have qualified for a referral when you originally joined but didn’t receive it, contact Octopus and ask them to check your account.
Can I use an Octopus referral link with any tariff?
A referral doesn’t mean you have to choose one particular Octopus tariff.
Octopus offers several different tariffs, including standard fixed and flexible products as well as specialist smart tariffs.
I use Octopus partly because I have an electric car and can take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity.
But don’t choose a tariff just because there’s a referral bonus attached. Compare the actual unit rates and standing charges first.
Is the Octopus refer-a-friend offer worth using?
If you’re already planning to switch to Octopus Energy, then yes.
There’s very little reason to deliberately miss out on £50 energy credit if you’re eligible for it.
However, £50 shouldn’t determine which energy supplier you choose.
An unsuitable or expensive tariff could easily cost you more than the referral reward over the course of a year.
My approach would be:
- get an Octopus quote
- compare it with your current tariff
- decide whether Octopus works for your household
- then use a referral link if you’re going ahead
